For homeowners, the onset of winter is a time to start ensuring that the home is properly buttoned-up, and there’s no more important part of the home to focus on than the attic. Our attics can have a huge impact on home performance. Ensuring that the insulation in your attic is up to par is one of the most important things you can do once the winter weather begins to hit, and it’s something that you can actually do yourself without fear of causing any damage.
In the words of Energy Star, it’s time to “rule your attic” before the temperatures really begin to drop. Here’s how you can get started.
Checking Insulation Levels in Your Attic
Start by grabbing a tape measure, or a ruler—either will work. You’re also going to need a flashlight, although your cell phone will suffice if it has one built in. Carefully raise the hatch on your attic after climbing the ladder or stairs, and reach out with your ruler or tape measure, sticking it into the insulation and taking note of its depth. Jot down or quickly memorize your measurements, and make sure to save them for after you’ve left the attic.
Once you have your measurements in hand, it’s time to determine whether or not your insulation is up to par. Living in Illinois, you should have no less than 16-18” of insulation in your attic. Otherwise, you’ll be below the recommended levels. If your attic insulation is below the recommended levels, call Assured Insulation Solutions right away! What you’re losing with a lack of insulation is not only comfort levels, but money as well—quite a bit of it during the cold winter months.
